IU was told to ’screw off’ in her debut days
Singer IU candidly shared her experience on starting a music career early in her teens, during the January 2nd episode of SBS’s “Heroes.”
The episode focused on the members acting as a ‘one-day professor’ for a high school senior class. The members were divided into two teams and were asked to present a lecture for the pending graduates.
IU used her experience as a young singer in the industry for the topic of her lecture. She started, “I debuted when I was in junior high school. I thought I’d do well, but I failed on all levels. I thought that if I sang, everyone would listen, but nobody cared and I received a lot of hate in return. There was even one person who told me to screw off during my debut stage.”
She continued, “For the first time, I was disappointed in myself. It was a precious album to me, but it failed so horribly. I began to wonder whether my company would stop producing albums for me. I knew that as long as I was able to sing, I didn’t care whether there was an audience or not.
As soon as I threw away my greed, however, an opportunity came.
‘Boo‘ was a better fit for my age group, so we pushed the cute concept and it became a hit. I never even thought that I’d be able to appear on variety programs, but now I’m a fixed cast member of ‘Heroes.’ It’s kind of shocking, but it also feels good.”
IU concluded her lecture with a message to the soon-to-be graduates by stating, “When you’re young, you get recognition for the littlest of things. You can’t trap yourself in that; you can’t expect to be forgiven for being ‘young’ forever. There will be a lot of people that treat you coldly when you take off your school uniform and enter society.”
