Joey: Alright Ross, look. You're feeling a lot of pain right now. You're angry. You're hurting. Can I tell you what the answer is?

gestures v. to move your hand, arm, or head to tell someone something, or show them what you mean 示意

Joey: Strip joint! C'mon, you're single! Have some hormones.
strip joint 有脱衣舞表演的那种娱乐场所
strip 作动词有 undress 脱衣之意，joint 可指 a cheap bar, club, or restaurant 合起来就是跳脱衣舞的娱乐场所
脱衣舞在美剧中很常见，貌似是外国人的一种娱乐方式，单身派对的时候还有邀请脱衣舞娘或者脱衣舞男来助兴的传统
hormone 荷尔蒙（汉语貌似就是英译过来的）
Joey是一个十足风流，又讨女人喜欢的角色，我理解是，这里他劝说Ross，离婚了算什么，释放你的荷尔蒙，找点乐子吧，重新振作吧！ Joey的振作方式就是去 strip joint！
Ross: I don't want to be single, okay? I just... I just- I just wanna be married again!
(Rachel enters in a wet wedding dress and starts to search the room.)
Ross刚说完想结婚，Rachel就穿着婚纱跑进来，是不是预示了什么呢？嘻嘻。
Chandler: And I just want a million dollars! (He extends his hand hopefully.)
小钱钱的搭话总是这么的尴尬。不过相信我，他简直就是快乐源泉。
Monica: Rachel?!
Rachel: Oh God Monica hi! Thank God! I just went to your building and you weren't there and then this guy with a big hammer said you might be here and you are, you are!
这是Rachel全剧的第一句话。她说话总是超级快，特别有感情，也体现了她敢爱敢恨，特别感性的个性。有老友迷说，Rachel说话总是像在唱歌一样，语音语调特别的丰富，是她的特色~
Waitress: Can I get you some coffee?
Monica: (pointing at Rachel) De-caff. (to All) Okay, everybody, this is Rachel, another Lincoln High survivor. (to Rachel) This is everybody, this is Chandler, and Phoebe, and Joey, and- you remember my brother Ross?

Rachel闯进来的时候气喘吁吁，特别激动，所以Monica让服务员给她不含咖啡因的咖啡。

幸存者大家都能理解，那么什么叫做高中的幸存者呢？这里是Mon在调侃，她和Rach是高中同学，他们的高中一定是一所很可怕的高中，能顺利毕业的都是幸存者了！

Ross: Hi.
(They go to hug but Ross's umbrella opens. He sits back down defeated again. A moment of silence follows as Rachel sits and the others expect her to explain.)

Mon也超级好笑的，这里她调侃说，（你穿着湿漉漉的婚纱突然闯进来）不给我们解释一下原委吗？还是等湿漉漉的伴娘到了再解释？
Rachel: Oh God... well, it started about a half hour before the wedding. I was in this room where we were keeping all the presents, and I was looking at this gravy boat. This really gorgeous Limoges gravy boat. When all of a sudden- (to the waitress that brought her coffee)Sweet 'n Low?- I realized that I was more turned on by this gravy boat than by Barry! And then I got really freaked out, and that's when it hit me: how much Barry looks like Mr. Potato Head. Y'know, I mean, I always knew looked familiar, but... Anyway, I just had to get out of there, and I started wondering 'Why am I doing this, and who am I doing this for?'. (to Monica) So anyway I just didn't know where to go, and I know that you and I have kinda drifted apart, but you're the only person I knew who lived here in the city.

Mr. Potato Head 蛋头先生，英文名Mr.Potato Head，迪士尼公司和皮克斯动画工作室公司于1995年合作推出的动画片《玩具总动员》角色。
请大家自行脑补Barry的样子。不瞒你说，后面Barry出来的时候，我觉得还真的挺像的！
wonder to think about something that you are not sure about and try to guess what is true, what will happen etc 想弄明白，想搞清楚
对比：wander to walk slowly across or around an area, usually without a clea rdirection or purpose 乱逛，乱晃
这两个词好像，很多人经常搞混~

注意：在通话中，介词用on on phone
matter v. to be important, especially to be important to you, or to have an effect on what happens 该词作动词，指的是 对……是重要的，有意义的
从Rach的回话中，我们不难猜到，她爸爸对她不爱Barry反应是，it doesn't matter！你爱不爱他没那么重要。Well, it matters to me! 这对我来说很重要！Rach迈出了自己独立的第一步。

cheer v. shout as a way of showing happiness, praise, approval, or support of someone or something 欢呼喝彩
聚会的时候，干杯，就可以说cheers。
六个人在一起，经常会做一些幼稚的事，但这也正是我们爱他们的原因，拥有一群可以一起疯一起闹的朋友，拥有一个属于自己的纯粹的小世界。

what if used to ask what you should do or what the result will be if something happens 如果
metaphor n. a way of describing something by referring to it as something different and suggesting that it has similar qualities to that thing 比喻，一般指的是暗喻，明喻用simile
我个人认为，Rach的这段话虽然很简单，但含义特别深，是我特别喜欢的一段话，重点推荐给大家。这一生，所有人都告诉你，你是一只鞋子。你是一只鞋子！但是你突然停住脚步，想，如果我不想做一只鞋子呢？如果我想做一个钱包，或者一个帽子呢？
人这一辈子，想清楚，自己想要的是什么，想走的路是什么，太难了。我们总被各种各样的因素所左右，所裹挟着，身不由己地向前走。但是，时不时还能找回点勇气，去照照自己的心，找找自己的路，是特别重要的一件事。

Ross是说，Rach父亲的问题就是听不懂这个比喻，还以为女儿想买帽子呢。

establish 该词更为常见的意思是：v. to start a company, organization, system, etc that is intended to exist or continue for a long time 建立
但在这里，结合上下文，应该是指的是：决定，定下（看来，谁和我一起住确定了，是Rachel）
Mon和Rach之前已经疏远了，而且Mon也不知道Rach要住在这里，但是当听到Rach在电话里这样说的时候，Mon不能在这个时候不管Rach，决定收留Rach，所以和大家解释道，（虽然我们之前没说好，）但看来我要和Rach一起住了。

breathe v. to take air into your lungs and send it out again 呼吸

这首歌应该很熟吧！音乐之声里女主角唱的 My favorite things. Phoebe想用这首歌来安慰Rachel。因为歌里说：
When I'm feeling sad
I simply remember my favorite things
And then I don't feel so bad
但是她的歌词记得不是很准确。真的好暖心。
这里想和大家交流一点背单词的方法：有时候我们已经认识很多单词了，但就是不会用，因为我们的思维还是中式的。我们不能只建立简单的中英对应关系，要把英文和表示的物品或者意思联系起来，尤其是名词。比如map，我们不要先想到中文：地图，而是脑海中要出现地图的样子，这样才能建立英式思维。我之前看到有人说，背名词的时候，就在旁边加上图片，我觉得这样的方法还挺好的，推荐给大家。
Rachel: I'm all better now.
Phoebe: (grins and walks to the kitchen and says to Chandler and Joey.) I helped!
grin to smile widely 咧嘴笑
Monica: Okay, look, this is probably for the best, y'know? Independence. Taking control of your life.
be for the best used to say that a particular event may seem bad now, but might have a good result later 意为一件事暂时看着不太好，但之后可能会带来好的影响或者结果。
take control of = had/gain control of 控制
≠ lose control of 失控
Joey: (comforting her) And hey, you need anything, you can always come to Joey. Me and Chandler live across the hall. And he's away a lot.
comfort v. to make someone feel less worried, unhappy, or upset, for example by saying kind things to them or touching them 安慰，也可作名词安慰

hit on informal to talk to someone in a way that shows you are sexually attracted to them 勾引

应该没有人不认识get吧，门铃响了，按开关放人进来，也用的是get，这种用法比较陌生，我们要多注意常见词在不同情形下的用法
Chandler: Please don't do that again, it's a horrible sound.
Paul: (over the intercom) It's, uh, it's Paul.
intercom n. a communication system by which people in different parts of a building, aircraft etc can speak to each other 沟通联络系统
Monica: Buzz him in!
Joey: Who's Paul?
Ross: Paul the Wine Guy, Paul?
Monica: Maybe.
这里Maybe的用法很有趣，Mon明明知道就是Paul，却故意这样说，我觉得是一方面害羞，一方面想试探一下大家的反应：大帅哥Paul来和她约会啦！
Joey: Wait a minure. Your“not a real date” is with Paul, the wine guy?
Ross: He finally asked you out?
ask sb. out 口语化用词，叫某人去约会
Monica: Yes!
Chandler: Ooh, this is a Dear Diary moment.
外国人写日记的时候，开头总是 Dear Diary，小钱钱的意思就是，Mon心仪已久的大帅哥Paul叫她约会，这简直太不可思议了，太令人激动了，要记日记的那种激动！这里也是Chan在打趣Mon。
Monica: Rach, wait, I can cancel...
Rachel: Please, no, go, that'd be fine!
Monica: (to Ross) Are, are you okay? I mean, do you want me to stay?
Ross: (choked voice) That'd be good...
choke v. to be unable to breathe properly because something is in your throat or there is not enough air 阻塞，噎住
choked voice 就是那种的哽咽的，抽抽噎噎的声音
Monica: (horrified) Really?
Ross: (normal voice) No, go on! It's Paul the Wine Guy!
Ross故意的，哈哈哈哈哈哈。幼稚！
(There's a knock on the door and it's Paul.)
Monica: Hi, come in! Paul, this is.. (They are all lined up next to the door.)... everybody, everybody, this is Paul.
line up v. if people line up, or if you line them up, they stand in a row or line, or you make them do this 站成直线，站成一队
All: Hey! Paul! Hi! The Wine Guy! Hey!
Chandler: I'm sorry, I didn't catch your name. Paul, was it?
catch 大家也很熟悉了，catch sb's name就是听清某人的名字Monica: Change! Okay, sit down. (Shows Paul in) Two seconds.

be supposed to do used to say what was or is expected or intended to happen, especially when it did not happen 本来应该做某事

deadpan adj. sounding and looking completely serious when you are saying or doing something funny 面无表情的，严肃的
Rachel: Well actually thanks, but I think I'm just gonna hang out here tonight. It's been kinda a long day.
hang out informal to spend a lot of time in a particular place or with particular people 口语化用词， 一起玩儿
hang out在美剧中也是高频词，随便出去玩玩，都叫 hang out
Ross: Okay, sure.
Joey: Hey Pheebs, you wanna help?
Phoebe: Oh, I wish I could, but I don't want to.

Ross: (squatting and reading the instructions) I'm supposed to attach a brackety thing to the side things, using a bunch of these little worm guys. I have no brackety thing, I see no whom guys whatsoever and- I cannot feel my legs.
squat v.to sit with your knees bent under you and your bottom just off the ground, balancing on your feet 蹲坐
attach to to fasten or connect one object to another 贴、黏，依附
brackety adj. 由bracket转化而来，bracket 指 n. a piece of metal, wood, or plastic, often in the shape of the letter L, fixed to a wall to support something such as a shelf 支架

screw 作动词，其中一个意思为： to cheat someone in order to get money from them 欺骗，这里got screwed 就是被骗了。Ross说自己虽然没有家具，但还拥有这些朋友，Chan和Joey马上说，那你真的是被骗了……哈哈哈哈吐槽Ross的时候，还吐槽了自己，莫名感觉有些萌呢。

catch on v. to begin to understand or realize something 意识到，发现
catch on 后一般加to catch on to sth.

mess一般是指混乱，困境，指人的时候，就是说这个人的状况一团糟

say 口语化用词，相当于 such as , like… 比如

go for to choose something 选择
！！go for 还有to attack or criticize someone攻击，破坏之意，在这里句意更贴合，但字典上这一用法后面只加人，因此我还是倾向于“选择”。大家可以讨论讨论，到底应该怎么理解？
Monica: You actually broke her watch?
[Scene: Monica's Apartment, Rachel is talking on the phone and pacing.]
Rachel: Barry, I'm sorry... I am so sorry... I know you probably think that this is all about what I said the other day about you making love with your socks on, but it isn't... it isn't, it's about me, and I ju- (She stops talking and dials the phone.) Hi, machine cut me off again... anyway..
Hi, machine cut me off again... 这句话也相当有趣。Rachel说电话出问题了，断了，大家却都看得出来，其实是被她甩了的未婚夫很不爽，挂了电话 不知道Rach 是找个借口锲而不舍地继续通话呢，还是傻傻地真以为电话断了……
[Scene: Ross's Apartment; Ross is pacing while Joey and Chandler are working on some more furniture.]
Ross: You know what the scariest part is? What if there's only one woman for everybody, y'know? I mean what if you get one woman- and that's it? Unfortunately in my case, there was only one woman- for her...
that's it used to say that something is completely finished or that a situation cannot be changed 就完了，就这么着了
也是美剧中经常出现滴！
Joey: What are you talking about? 'One woman'? That's like saying there's only one flavor of ice cream for you. Lemme tell you something, Ross. There's lots of flavors out there. There's Rocky Road, and Cookie Dough, and Bing! Cherry Vanilla. You could get 'em with Jimmies, or nuts, or whipped cream! This is the best thing that ever happened to you! flavor n. the particular taste of a food or drink 口味
Joey把女人比作冰淇淋的这段台词，也是第一集里很有名的一段台词。（三观当然是很不正的啊！）一方面反映了Joey风流的性格，另一方面也体现了他的爱吃。风流和爱吃是Joey最突出的两个特点。Rocky Road， Cookie Dough， Cherry Vanilla三种都是国外比较流行的甜品。
Jimmies 洒在冰淇淋上的巧克力碎

grab a spoon 通过上下文，大家可以理解，这里grab a spoon 的意思就是，不要沉溺在失败的婚姻里，振作起来再去约会吧。grab a spoon 本身并没有这层意思，本意为拿起勺子，而这里Joey把女人比作了冰淇淋，他让Ross拿起勺子去挖冰淇淋吃，也就是再去寻找爱情。
Ross: I honestly don't know if I'm hungry or horny.

这两句是国外婚礼的必备句
Rachel: Oh...see... but Joanie loved Chachi! That's the difference!
What difference? Joanie 爱 Chachi 而Rachel 不爱 Barry。正是因为Rachel意识到这一点，她才逃婚了。

[Scene: Ross's Apartment, they're all sitting around and talking.]
Ross: (scornful) Grab a spoon. Do you know how long it's been since I've grabbed a spoon? Do the words 'Billy, don't be a hero' mean anything to you?

Do the words 'Billy, don't be a hero' mean anything to you? 因为缺乏相关的背景知识，对这句话的理解有许多不同的说法。我更倾向于这样理解：《Billy,Don't Be a Hero》是一首老歌，前面Ross说，你让我grab a spoon ，但是你知道我上一次grab a spoon 是多久之前吗？我上次grab a spoon的时候，《Billy, Don't Be a Hero》还在放呢。Ross想表达，他已经很久没有grab a spoon了，这件事没有Joey说的那么容易。
