Mike Bibby says he will remain the boys basketballcoach at Phoenix Shadow Mountain next season, while his son Michael will be inhis first year in college.
There was speculation that Bibby would only coachuntil his son was finished with his high school career. He had coached hisson's club teams since Michael was 6.
Mike coached Shadow Mountain to two statechampionships in the three seasons he has been the lead coach. He was given thepermanent title "head coach" this year.
"I'll be back next year," Mike said."I'd like to eventually move onto bigger and better things. I don't knowwhen that will be. We'll have to wait and see. I definitely would like to moveup in the ranks. Maybe go to college. Maybe the NBA some day."
Meanwhile, Michael, a senior who led ShadowMountain to the Division II state championship as the point guard, isbeing patient on where he winds up in college.
Mike's University of Arizona roommate his freshmanyear in 1996-97 was Josh Pastner, the head coach at Memphis.
It was reported Friday that Memphis is going tostick with Pastner.
That Memphis offer could appear more enticing now.
"Josh offered my son the day he wasborn," Mike said.
Before Friday's decision by Memphis, Bibby saidthey were going to wait until after the NCAA Tournament was over beforemaking college visits.
Mike texted Friday after learning that Memphis willretain Pastner that, "We're gonna take a visit there."
Pacific could be in the picture after DamonStoudamire was recently hired as head coach.
Stoudamire, a former UA point guard who led theWildcats to the 1994 Final Four, had recruited Michael Bibby while he was anassistant at Memphis.
"We're waiting for transfers, people looking for the NBA," Mike Bibby said. "And coaches are getting fired. We'renot in any rush."
The elder Bibby reminded how All-Arizona guardCraig Randall waited until August, three months after graduating from ShadowMountain, to commit and sign with Memphis.
"I'm just going to wait until after thetournament," Michael Bibby said. "I'll take some visits, see howthe coaches are, see how the players are around me.
"I want to go where I can play and fit inwell."
Mike Bibby said he'd like to see his son play at amajor college but he's not ruling anything out.
"We're not looking past anybody," MikeBibby said.
Mike said he's not worried about being apart fromhis son next season, that it is time for his son to be on his own.
