The giving tree 是个小故事，简单得在中国多被初中用作朗读、翻译、写读后感用。但这是国外读者最爱的故事之一，也就是这世界上绝大多数说英语的人都读过并且喜爱这个故事。因为简单而轻视的初学者们，你将因为自己的浮躁又一次失去了一次体验自己情感的机会。


The giving tree 通译作《爱心树》，我最早听到这个故事是在十多年前。听完后心理有股说不出的滋味。这里现今的朋友多是我临床心理学工作的老师，这个故事作为投射测试就很好。有人第一想到的是恋爱关系中的赋予，有人第一想到的是与抚养人的关系，也有人第一想到男孩子的贪婪（拒绝赋予的人）。总之，含义很深的一个故事。
The giving tree 给予的树
Once there was a tree, and she loved a little boy.
从前有一棵树，她爱着一个小男孩。
And every day, the boy would come, and he would gather her leaves. Make them into crowns, and play king of the forest. 每天这个男孩都会来，每天他都收集她的叶子，并把叶子制成王冠，玩丛林之王的游戏。
He would climb up her trunk, swing from her branches, and eat apples. They would play hide-and-go-seek.
爬上树干，在她的树枝上荡，吃苹果。他们会玩捉迷藏的游戏。
When he was tired, he would sleep in her shade. And he boy loved the tree…very much. And the tree was happy.
当他累了的时候，他可以在她的树荫下歇息。男孩爱着这棵树，非常爱，树很开心。
But time went by, and the boy grew older, the tree was often alone.
但是时间一点点过去，男孩长大了，树常常一人呆在原地。
Then one day, the boy came to the tree and the tree said,” come, boy, come and climb up my trunk and swing from my branches and eat apples, play in my shade and be happy.” “I am too big to climb and play,” said the boy.
有一天男孩来到树前，树说“来啦，来爬爬我的树干，摇摇我的树枝，吃点苹果，在树荫下玩耍，开开心心的。”“我太大了不能爬树和玩了。”
“I want to buy things and have fun. I want some money. Can you give me some money?” “我要买东西寻开心。我需要钱了，你能给些钱吗？”
“I’m sorry,” said the tree,” but I have no money, I have only leaves and apples. Take my apples, boy, and sell them in the city. Then you will have money and you will be happy.” So the boy climbed up the tree and gathered her apples and carried them away. And the tree was happy.
“对不起”树说，“我没有钱，我只有叶子和苹果，拿走我的苹果吧，卖了它，你就会有钱了，你会开开心心的。”男孩爬上了树，拿着苹果离去。树很开心。
But the boy stayed away for a long time… And the tree was sad.
但是男孩一走就是很长时间，树很伤心。
Then one day, the boy came back and the tree shook with joy and she said:”come, boy, climb up my trunk and swing form my branches and be happy.” “I am too busy to climb trees,” said the boy. “I want a house to keep me warm,” he said.
直到有一天男孩回来了，树很开心的摇晃着说“来，爬爬我的树干，摇摇我的枝叶，开开心心的。”“我太忙了不能爬树了，”男孩说“所以我需要房子取暖。”
“I want a wife and I want children, so I need a house. Can you give me a house?”
“我需要房子，想要妻子，我想要孩子,你能给我一个房子吗?”
“I have no house,” said the tree. “The forest is my house, but you may cut off my branches and build a house. Then you will be happy.”
“我没有房子，”树说“森林就是我的家，不过你可以砍下我的枝条去搭建房子，那样你就会开开心心的”。
So the boy cut off her branches and carried them away to build his house. The tree was happy… But the boy stayed away for a long time. And when he came back, the tree was so happy, she could hardly speak,” come, boy,” she whispered. “Come and play.”
男孩砍下枝条，去修建房子。树很开心„„但是男孩又是很长时间没有来，当他回来的时候，树几乎不能说话，“来，孩子”她低声说“来玩吧”。
“I am too old and sad to play,” said the boy.
“我太老了，而且很悲伤”男孩说。
“I want a boat that will take me far away from here. Can you give me a boat?”
“我要一艘船带我离开这里。你能给我一只船吗？”
“Cut down my trunk and make a boat,” said the tree. ”Then you can sail away… and be happy.” So the boy cut down her trunk and made a boat and sailed away. The tree was happy… but not really.
“砍下我的树干，做一艘船”树说“那样你就可以离开这里，开开心心的。”男孩砍下了树干，做了小船，远航。树很开心，但并非如此。
After a long time, the boy came back again. “I’m sorry, boy,” said the tree, “but I have nothing left to give you… My apples are gone.”
很长一段时间过去了，男孩回来了。“对不起，孩子，”树说，“但是，我已经没有可以给你的东西了，我已经没有苹果了。”
“My teeth are too weak for apples,” said the boy.
“我的牙齿已经没办法吃苹果了，”男孩说。
“My branches are gone,” said the tree. “you can not swing on them…” “I’m too old to swing on branches,” said the boy. “我的枝条也没了，”树说.你不能再上面玩了”“我的太老了不能在玩枝上荡了,”男孩说。
“My trunk is gone,” said the tree, ”you cannot climb…” “I am too tired to climb,” said the boy. “我的树干没有了,”树说，“你不能爬了。”“我已经太累了爬不动了。”男孩说。
“I am sorry,” said the tree. ”I wish that I could give you something…”but I have nothing left. I am just an old stump, I am sorry…”
“对不起，”树说，“我真希望能给你些东西，可是我什么都不剩了。我只是„一个树桩了。对不起……”
“I don’t need very much now,” said the boy, “just a quiet place to sit and rest. I am tired.” “Well,” said the tree, straightening herself up as much as she could,
“现在，我不再需要很多东西了，”男孩说，“只要一个安静的地方歇歇脚。我累了。”“那么，”树说，尽力的挺直了身躯。
“well, an old stump is good for sitting and resting. Come, boy, sit down. Sit down and rest.” The boy did. “那么，一个老树桩就是一个适合休息的地方。来，孩子，坐吧，坐下休息吧。”男孩坐下了。
And the tree was happy… 树真的开心了……
