The Blue Bay Shepherd was named for their origin in Palm Bay, Florida and the blue German Shepherd Dogs in their ancestry. The goal is to produce dogs that are wolf-like in appearance but easier to care for than wolfdogs. There are very few of these dogs on the ground currently, as the first puppies were born in March of 2011 to three pairs of foundation animals.
The history of the Blue Bay Shepherds dogs does contain wolf heritage, but they should be suitable for anyone with experience with dogs like the German Shepherd Dog. This breed has well-bred, low-drive, pet quality GSDs in their ancestry, so should not be overly protective, shy or sharp in temperament. Blue Bay Shepherds are intelligent and willing to please, catching on to training quickly. Given the opportunity, these dogs could excel in any working or training activities that do not require aggression. Temperament of a Blue Bay should be friendly and outgoing , this gregarious nature will extend also to strangers if well socialized with different people, animals and situations from puppyhood.
The Blue Bay is capable of sharing a home with smaller pets like cats if raised with them from an early age. However, they can be destructive when bored, so require plenty of exercise as well as appropriate activities to do when unsupervised.
Blue Bay Shepherds come in long, plush and shorter coat lengths as well as a variety of colors, but all will be shades of blue (diluted black pigment in skin, eyes and coat) in coloration. The available coat colors are solid blue, blue sable, as well as blue and tan. Future breedings may also produce whites masking blue, bluefawns, and blue platinums. Eyecolor at maturity should range in shades of light gray-green to gold in coloration. Young Blue Bay puppies have light blue eyes, this color will change to the adult coloration as they mature. Although the dilute gene can be problematic in some other breeds of dogs, it does not affect the health of the Blue Bay Shepherd. Overall this should be a very healthy breed, suitable for people who want a large, friendly, intelligent, engaging dog with wolf-like looks.”

蓝湾的前身是斯宾塞，由美国一个女育种者培育而出，她根据蓝色德牧和蓝色混血狼的毛色定位了蓝湾的发展方向。固体蓝色是一种稀释的黑色，本身这种毛色的存在非常不稳定，也不容易出现，研究到这两年才找到了繁殖出固体蓝色的方式，虽然毛色是研究出来了，不过离稳定还是有距离的，它们后来被命名为蓝湾牧羊犬加以进一步培育。
