俗语。病来时很快很重，像山倒下来那样；而病退时很难很慢，像抽丝那样。也作“病来如墙倒，病去如抽丝”。

 not even up to theirs , 
that will be disgraceful .

[例] （3）要是真拿那玉给他，那和尚有些古怪，倘或一给了他，又闹到家口不宁，岂不是～了么？（117回）
If you really gave the jade back , 
that monk is so odd that 
 he could cause fresh trouble for 
our family and that would never do .

[不成体统] V
指言语、行为不符合身份、规矩、礼仪。也作“不大体统”、 “不成个体统”。（体统：指格局、规矩、仪式 pattern , behavior , decency etc .）

As for Baoyu , he is like a ten-foot lampstand （十英尺的灯架 东篱注）
 that sheds lignt on others 
but none on itself . 
 He complains that 
other people are dirty , 
yet leaves you to turn his 
own rooms topsyturvy . 
Unpresentable , I call it . 


[例] （3）. 紫鹃）只是心里怕他（黛玉）见了宝玉，那一个（宝玉）已经是疯疯傻傻，这一个又这样恍恍惚惚，（两人）一时说出～的话来，那如何是好？（96回）
Zijuan was afraid of 
Daiyu’s visit to Baoyu , 
for Baoyu was already demented 
and now Daiyu was bemused too—what 
 if they said something most improper ?

║You can’t gain knowledge without practice .

[不经之谈] V
指荒唐的没有根据的话。（经：经典 classics . 又指通常的道理 general truth . 不经：不合道理；荒唐的 absurd . 谈：话 that which is said .）

[不可枚数] V
不能一一数尽，形容为数很多。
也作“不胜枚举”。（枚：个 one of anything .）

they stripped him of his scented pouch ,

[不三不四] V
形容不正派或不成样子。

[不是东风压了西风，就是西风压了东风] V
俗语：比喻矛盾的双方，不是这方压倒那方，就是那方压倒这方。

║Either the east wind prevails 
over the west wind , 
or the west wind prevails over 
the east wind .

[例] 黛玉从不闻袭人背地里说人，今听此话有因，便说道：“这也难说。但凡家庭之事，〜。” （82回）
Daiyu guessed there was something behind this , 
 as it was not Xiren’s habit to gossip 
 in such a way behind people’s backs ：
“ Well , it’s hard to say , ”
 Daiyu answered . “ In every family , 
 if the east wind doesn’t prevail over 
 the west wind , then the west wind 
 is bound to prevail over the east wind . ” 

[不是冤家不聚头] V
俗语，指越是双方有矛盾和纠纷，越是容易碰到一起，从而引起新的矛盾。《红》书中意思是：越是分不开的亲密者，越是在感情上过细计较，因而多生误会，反成纷争，竟像冤家对头。也作“不是冤家不碰头”。
（冤家：仇人，对头：enemy ; 
foe .旧时对极爱的人的昵称
 sweetheart-a term of endearment . 
聚头：聚合到一处 to get together . ）

[不闻不问] V
别人说的不去听，自己也不去问。形容对人或对事不关心，不过问。也作“不问不闻”。
（闻：听 to hear . 询问 to inquire .）

[例] 贾母笑道：“我喜欢他（凤姐）这样，况且他又不是那〜的孩子。家常没人，娘儿们原该这样。横竖礼体不错就罢，没有倒叫他见神鬼似的作什么。”（38回）
“ I like her as she is . ” 
The old lady chuckled . 
“ Besides , she never really oversteps the mark . 
When we’ve no visitors 
we should joke and chat , 
so long as the young people don’t break 
the main rules of propriety . 
Why should we expect them 
to behave like angels ? ”

[不知好歹] V
不知道什么是好的，什么是坏的，多指不能领会别人的好意。也指不懂事，不明事理。也作“不识好歹”、“不识好恶”。
（好歹：好与坏 what’s good and what’s bad .）

You young people 
 haven’t known good from bad . 
 If youn’d just think up some way 
to earn a few cash to keep youself 
well fed and decently dressed , 
how pleased I should be !

[例] （3）也倒是件阴骘事，保全人的贼名儿。只是太太听见了又说你小孩子淘气，〜了。（61回）
Of course that would be a kind deed , 
clearing their reputations . 
When the mistress hears about it , 
 though , she’ll scold you again for 
having no sense and acting so childishly .

[不知进退] V
形容言语行动轻浮冒失，没有分寸。

[例] 况我又不是他们这里正经主子，原是无依无靠投奔了来的，他们已经多嫌着我了。如今我还〜，何苦叫他们咒我？（45回）

They resent me enouth as it is . 
If I have no sense of propriety , 
They would all start cursing me .

【仓老鼠和老鸹去借粮——守着的没有，飞着的有】 V
歇后语。意思是该有的倒没有，不该有的反而有。
（仓老鼠：谷仓中的老鼠 a rat in the barn . 
老鸹：乌鸦 a crow .）

asked a crow for grain , 
as if a bird on the wing bad some while 
the rat living in the barn had none .

[例] 你舅母姨娘两三个亲戚都管着，怎不和他们要（杏子）的，倒和我来要。这可是仓老鼠和老鸹去借粮——守着的没有，飞着的有。（61回）

in charge of things here .

Why apply to me ? This is like the rat in 
the barn who ask a crow for grain ,

【苍蝇不抱无缝的蛋】 V
俗语。比喻一个人有了缺点或把柄，别人才乘隙而入。

║Flies go for cracked eggs .

[例] 又道是苍蝇不抱无缝的蛋。虽然这柳家的没偷，到底有些影儿，人才说他。虽不加贼刑，也革出不用。（61回）
Flies go for cracked eggs . 
Even if this Liu woman 
didn’t steal anything , 
she must have been up to something 
or people woulden’t have accused her . 
Even if we don’t punish her , we should dismiss her .



【藏头露尾】 V
藏起了头，却露出个尾巴。比喻说话、行事躲躲闪闪，怕露真相。不直截了当说出来。也作“露尾藏头”。
（藏头：把头藏起来 to hide the head . 
露尾：露出尾巴 to expose the tail . ）

形容各色的美丽花朵争妍斗艳。也作“嫣红姹紫”。（姹：美丽 beautiful . 嫣红：浓艳的红色 bright red . ）

【钗荆裙布】 V
荆枝作钗，粗布为裙，形容女子服饰简朴，能够安于贫穷生活。也作“荆钗布裙”。
（钗荆：用荆枝作钗 a thorn for a hairpin . 
裙布：用粗布作裙 plain cloth for a skirt .）

║a thorn hairpin and a coarse 
skirt—the simple dress of a woman

【搀前落后】 V
有的抢前，有的落后，很不整齐。（搀：抢 to rush .）

形容人特别贪嘴，此处用来形容贪恋女色。

“ He’s only a boy and as greedy as a cat . 
This sort of thing can’t be helped . 
All young men go through such stages . 
It’s my fault for making Xifeng drink

【蟾宫折桂】 V
相传月中有桂树，攀折月宫里的桂枝旧时比喻科举考中被称为蟾宫折桂。
（蟾：指蟾蜍，俗称癞蛤蟆 toad .蟾宫：即月宫，指月亮。传说月亮中有蟾蜍，故名。
 the Palace of the Moon : the fabled 
toad in the moon which is called 
“ The Palace of Chan or The Moon ” .
折：攀折 to pluck . 桂：桂树 Chinese cinnamon tree ）

 those pedants who must 
‘ study by the light of reflected 
snow or glow—worms’ to pass 
the examination for the highest degree 
in order to climb up to exalted positions . ”

【颤颤巍巍】 V
摇晃颤抖的样子。
（颤：颤抖 shake ; tremble . 巍巍：高大样子 towering . ）

answered : “ By grace of Your Highness ,

冗长的发言和文章。多指讲话或文章过长，内容空泛，不切实际。用于贬义。也作“长篇大套”。

[例] （2）原稿在哪里？倒要细细一读。长篇大论，不知说的是什么，只听见中间两句，什么“红绡帐里，公子多情；黄土垄中，女儿薄命。”这一联意思却好。（79回）
Where is your draft ? 
I must resd it carefully . 
I didn’t hear the whole long piece , 
only the two lines: “ The young lordling 
behind red gauze curtains is filled with 
longing for the ill-fated maid in 
her mound of yellow earth .” 
That’s a felicitous couplet .

【长天老日】 V
形容夏日的白天时间长。

[例] 贾母因又向宝钗道：“你也去，连你母亲也去。长天老日的，在家里也是睡觉。”（29回）
“ You must go , and your mother too ,” 
said the Lady Dowager to Baochai .

【长吁短叹】 V
长声短声不住的叹息。形容神情沮丧。也作“短叹长吁”。
（长吁：长声叹息 to heave a long sigh . 
短叹：短声叹息 to heave a short sigh ）

As Xue Pan kept sighing incessantly 
and looked very downcast , 
not urging his guests to drink in 
 his usual cheerful way .

【常造之客】 V
经常来的客人。
（造：前往；到 to go to ; to arrive at .）

【畅心满意】 V
心情畅快，心满意足。

wonderful thing that had ever happened 
from time immemorial in the human world .

【超凡入圣】 V
指超过了凡人，达到了圣人的境界。形容道德、学问等的修养非常精深。也指超脱尘世，得道成仙。也作“入圣超凡”。
（超：超过；高出 to surpass ; to rise above . 
凡：指凡人：普通人 ordinary person ; mortal 
圣：圣人；神仙 sainthood , immortal . ）

【赤身露体】 V
光着身子，一丝不挂。也作“赤身裸体”。
（赤、露：光着；赤裸 naked ; bare .）

So what they mean by 
 the pure heart of a new-born baby 
was simply love for humanity . 
What would the world come 
to if everyone took your advice and 
disregarded all natural relationship ?

【瞅人不防】 V
乘人不备。
（瞅：看；瞅见 to look at ; to see 
防：防备 to guard against .）

拔：超越 to rise above .
萃：萃集；聚集 a collection , a gathering of people .）

【雏凤清于老凤声】 V
比喻晚辈的才学超过前人。下一代更有才华。也简作“雏凤清声”。
（雏凤：比喻优秀子弟 young phoenix—a talented 
young man or a promising young student .
清声：指鸣声清越 the sound of young phoenix 
being clear and melodious . ）

║A young phoenix sings better than an 
old one—said of a student surpassing his master .
/ The young phoenix may even surpass the old one .

[例] 水溶见他（宝玉）语言清楚，谈吐有致，一面又向贾政笑道：“令郎真乃龙驹凤雏，非小王在世翁前唐突，将来‘雏凤清于老凤声’未可量也。”（15回）
The clarity and fluency of Baoyu’s anwers made 
the prince turn to observe to Jia Zheng , 
“ Your son is truly a dragon’s colt 
or young phoenix . 
May I venture to predict that in times 
to come this young phoenix may even 
 surpass the old one ? ”

【穿罗罩纱】 V
形容穿着华贵的衣服。

║to be dressed in silks and gauzes
/ to wear the silks and gauzes

[例] 单管穿罗罩纱，吃的戴的，都是人家不认得的。那些哥儿姐儿们更不用说了，要天上的月亮，也有人去拿下来给他顽。（83回）
The silks and gauzes they wear , 
all their food and ornaments too , 
are things that common folk 
never even heard of . 
As for the young masters and mistresses , 
of course it goes without saying 
that if they want the moon from the sky 
someone will pluck it down for 
them to play with !

【垂手待立】 V
形容恭敬地站在旁边，准备随时听从吩咐。也作“垂手恭立”。
（垂手：表示恭敬 to show respect . 
待：伺候 to wait upon . ）

【垂头丧气】 V
低着脑袋，有气无力。形容神情沮丧，意气消沉，萎靡不振。
（垂头：耷拉着脑袋 to hang one’s head down . 
丧气：意气颓丧 lowspirit . ）

【垂涎落魄】 V
形容非常贪婪因而心神不定的样子。
（垂：挂下来 to hang down . 涎：口水 saliva . 
落魄：心神不定 to lose 
the soul—to be confused in mind . ）

[例] （尤三姐）哄的男子们垂涎落魄，欲近不能，欲远不舍，迷离颠倒，他以为乐。（65回）
Third Sister infatuated men until 
they were fairly drooling , 
unable either to approach her or stay away . 
She delighted in keeping them 
on a string like this .
