Glossary of Chinese Painting


Baimiao（白描）--Outline drawing, without color, shading or wash. 

 

 Baiwen（白文）--White characters; the characters of a seal cut intaglio, so that they print white with a red background. 

 

 Baibi（败笔）--A faulty stroke in ink-painting. 

 

 Bi（笔）--1. brush. 2.a brush stroke. 3.stylistic brush stroke (charactering an artist, locality, era, etc.).

 

Bili（笔力）--Vigour of strokes in ink-painting.

 

 Bimo (笔墨)  --Brush and ink; a general term of technique of ink-painting; "brush" refers to the technique of outlining, shading, dotting, etc.; "ink"refers to the technique of using ink in various ways.

 

 Bihua（壁画）--Wall painting; mural painting; fresco.

 

 Bingxuexuan（冰雪宣）--Ice snow paper. It is creamy white and sized, with a soft texture and barely perceptible mold marks, used as a ground in painting.

 

 Bogu（博古）--Curios or antiques as subject matter, coming within the broad figure painting classifications; the painting of pictures of old bronzes, porcelains, etc.

 

 Buju（布局）--The process of planning a composition

 Caoyimiao（曹衣描）--The garmen lines used by Cao Buxing（曹不兴）of Han Dynasty. The point of the brush is used, and the strokes are close together, flowing as tributaries into one another, making a continuous rhythm of separate strokes. 

 

 Ceye（册页）--An album of paintings or calligraphy.

 

 Cebi（侧笔）--Side brush technique, the brush held and used in an oblique position.

 

 Cengci（层次）--Arrangement of objects (as background, intermediate scene and foreground) in painting.

 

 Chuanshen（传神）--Vivid; lifelike; convey the spirit vividly.

 

 Chuanyi moxie（传移模写）--Venerated traditions (master the traditional skill by means of "transmitting the past"). One of Liufa

 

 Chuanzhen（传真）--To transmit truly; to paint a true likeness.

 

 Chuncan-tusifa（春蚕吐丝法）--Garment lines similar to the strands of silk emitted by the silkworm, also called gaoguyousimiao(高古游丝描).

 

 Cunfa（皴法）--The method of showing the shades and texture of rocks and mountains by light ink strokes in landscape painting.

    Dafupicun（大斧劈皴）--Application of stroke s resembling the cuts made by a big axe. 

     

     Dagouyun（大勾云）--Large outline clouds. The strokes are typically short, show less systematic continuity or parallelism, and are modulated thick and thin.

     

     Dahundian（大混点）--Large confused dots, oval, laid on with the side of the brush, used for summer leaves of various wide-leafed varieties.

     

     Danqing（丹青）--Painting; the art of painting.

     

    —— 丹青妙笔 superb artistry in ink-painting.

     

     Danxuan（单宣）--A thin, single layer, unsized paper（宣纸）used as a ground in painting.

     

     Danmo（淡墨）--Light ink, used to depict the raised parts or the far background.

     

     Dianjing（点睛）--To give a finishing outline or dotting with black ink; to add the touch that brings a work of art to life.

     

     Dingtoushuweimiao（钉头鼠尾描）--Lines like rat tails with beginnings like nail heads, long and tapering, used for garments.

     

     Doufang（斗方）--A small album painting, usually square.

     

     Duzhou（独轴）--Independent scroll, also called guzhou（孤轴）.

     

     Duanyan（端砚）--A kind of high-quality inkslab made in Zhaoqing, Guangdong Province（广东肇庆）.

    Fanxuan（矾宣）--A variety of sized paper, used as a ground in painting and writing, also called shuxuan（熟宣）. 

     

     Feibai（飞白）--Flying white; a technique in which the hairs of the brush are permitted to separate so that a stroke is not solid black, but broken by streaks of untouched ground. It is done with a half-dry brush.

     

     Feitian（飞天）--Flying Apsaras (as in the frescoes of the Dunhuang Caves).

     

     Fenben（粉本）--A draft or preliminary sketch; a study of cartoon.

     

     Fenling（粉临） --Copying by tracing and transferring. The painting is traced in outline, and then the tracing paper is reversed and the outline retraced in white. The paper is placed white side down on a new piece of paper or silk and rubbed with a damp cloth, transferring the white outline to the new ground.

     

     Fengsu renwu（风俗人物）--Genre paintings; paintings of local customs, manners, festivals, etc.

     

     Fupicun（斧劈皴）--Axe cuts, a brush stroke techinque giving the effect of the cuts made by an axe.

      Jinbi shanshui（金碧山水）--Gold and green landscapes; landscapes with gold outlines; landscape on which the colors of golden paint（泥金）,azurite（石青）and mineral green（石绿）are dominant.

      Linben（临本）--A copy of a painting made with the original before the artist as a model. 

       

      Linmo（临摹）--To copy (a painting); imitate.

       

      Liuyemiao（柳叶描）--Lines like willow leaves, usually starting narrow, widening, and then tapering to a point, used for garments.

      Mailuo（脉络）--Outlines of peaks resembling blood veins. 

       

      Maobi（毛笔）--Chinese writing brush; painting brush.

       

      Meiguhua（没骨画）--Boneless painting, painting without outline, especially in color.

       

      Midiancun（米点皴）--The dotting method of Mi Fei（米芾），used to give contour and solidity to mountains and earth, the effect is similar to that of pimacun（披麻皴）。

       

      Miao（描）--To draw; to outline.

       

      Mo（摹）--To copy (by the methods of tracing or transferring).

       

      Mofang（摹仿（模仿）--Imitate; an exact copy.

       

      Moxie（摹写（模写）--Imitate.

       

      Mo（墨）--Chinese ink, made by mixing carbon with glue, usually in form of a cake or stick, some finely decorated.

       

      Mofenwuse （墨分五色）--Five tints of ink color shown according to the quantity of water added. They are: 浓 Nong, dark black.。淡 Dan, light black. 黑 Hei, black.干 Gan, dry black. 湿 Shi, wet black.

       

      Moxi（墨戏）--Flower-and-bird painting without outline, painted partly in ink and wash.
