SS nuclear research in Czechoslovakia
Heavy water was not the only method for moderating nuclear reactors. The SS operated it's own nuclear research organisation which was independent of the Reichs Research Council which Heisenberg was involved with. It had the deceivingly gentele name of Forschungen Entwicklungen und Patente ("FEP") under SS Obergruppenfuhrer Emil Mazuw. Heisenberg was totally unaware of FEP's operations. FEP was a top secret parallel SS resarch organisation.
Mazuw's organisation had a hidden nuclear research laboratory in Czechoslovakia's Wenceslas coal mines at Walbrzych. The device there used Thorium Peroxide in a shell made with Beryllium. It contained a liquid metal moderator which the Nazis called "Xerum 525". By it's reported properties it sounded like liquid sodium used after the war in Soviet naval reactors. We know these things from witnesses and records of NKVD's interrogation of SS Obergruppenfuhrer Jakob Sporrenberg after the war.
Though there are various interpretations of the purpose of the machine deep inside the coal mine, codenamed Chronus, my estimation is that it was some kind of breeder reactor for production of Uranium 233 from Thorium Peroxide. It was said to have emitted a strange blue light reminiscent to me of the glow from spent nuclear fuel rods in cooling tanks. Technicians from a nearby concentration camp fell ill with what seemed radiation sickness. The machine was evacuated from the mine in February 1945 and the mine shaft was flooded.
