In diagram #2, the Pawn is our target again. To stop it from advancing, a Knight has been used to physically block its advance. The Bishop attacks the pawn from g2 and can win the Pawn on the next move.

In diagram #3, we have the same Pawn. However, this time we are not physically placing a piece on the square in front of the Pawn. We are controlling the square from a distance with the Knight on b3.

With the move Nc2, White accomplishes the task of controlling the square in front of the Pawn. White can now set about attacking the Pawn on d5 directly. White can accomplish this by moving his bishop on f1 to g2 forcing Black's knight on e6 onto the defensive with the move Nc7.

Now White can attack the pawn with another piece by moving the knight on c2 to b4 and Black will lose the pawn. “First stop the piece in its tracks and then attack it.” It is a team game. Use your whole army and your attack will be truly overwhelming.

In diagram #5, the Pawn on d5 is pinned to the King. This is an absolute pin. With the move e4, White will win the Pawn on d5. Very often there is a pile up of attacks on the pinned piece. Sometimes everything looks equal but the lowly Pawn push tips the balance and wins the day.

The Knight's, Bishop's, Rook's, and Queen's are faster moving pieces and the simplest way to stop them in their tracks also is to pin them to something the same way we have done here.

The diagram shows us a Knight that has wandered away from the protection of its King. Now it has been corralled by the Rook. The King can march over and capture the Knight as if it had been pinned。
