很早就看了《暗物质》，没想到一个很戏剧化的故事导演会处理成那样，很规范化的艺术电影，音乐、画面都非常讲究，其实最讲究的还是演员的表演。 这个改编于10年多前美国发生的真实事件的电影，用水木火土金等中国五行结构全片，讲述了来自内地的中国留学生的心理历程，他的论文在遭到学术潜规则后，开枪杀死了导师和同学。刘烨演的就是这个留学生。 刘烨是个好演员，但他一直没有遇到围绕他的绝对男主角的电影，尽管他与张艺谋、陈凯歌都有合作，但都是商业剧情大片群戏中的角色，每次他都能完成好工作，特别是《无极》中的表演很精彩。他需要一部好电影，展现他表演的层次与对角色整体感的驾驭能力。《暗物质》帮他实现了。 这部影片中，刘烨很好地表现了角色的变化，从单纯热情到幻灭悲凉。特别喜欢他和梅丽尔斯特里谱告别的那场戏，他在推销化妆品，给梅试用。 以前我还担心刘烨可能存在内地优秀男演员的通病，那就是不稳定，还有就是表演有一定局限，看完《暗物质》后，这个想法消除了。我很不喜欢陈道明之类的演员，永远在演自己，非常不靠谱，十分无聊。在《暗物质》中，刘烨用扎实的演技，把内地其他男演员全给杀了。 希望《暗物质》早日在内地公映。 |

2003年，加斯·范·斯特执导了一部是以校园枪击案为故事题材的影片第56届嘠那电影节金棕榈奖、最佳导演奖.片名叫《大象》，感觉文不对题，若生拉硬扯的讲，可能就是一个庞然大物忽然闯入了校园...... 2006年，刘烨与好莱坞影后梅丽尔-斯特里普领衔主演了一部同样题材的电影《暗物质》，在国内点映。应海润影视邀请，我和部分媒体代表，一同欣赏了这部影片。点映后，大家与刘烨进行了交流。 讨论的话题围绕，电影文本的并不太多，更多焦点是放在：几年前中国留美研究生枪击美国博导和同门师弟这个新闻事件，能否在国内上画？在美上画的考虑等社会话题展开。 影片，整体的感觉就是稚嫩，尤其表现在导演手法和叙事上。故事是以一个真实的新闻事件改编，在我看来，“卢刚校园枪击案”的事件，很震撼，至少结果很震撼，由于当年咱国媒体只是淡化处理了，我们只知道的是个结果，其中的过程并不了解。本期待着通过影片获得些真实的信息，可影片应该没能完成这个任务。 影片中刘烨的表演，给我一个很大的惊喜。在室友为他理发，他黯然泪下；他推销化妆品，与梅丽尔-斯特里普的对手戏；他驾车教梅丽尔-斯特里普唱中文歌..... 刘烨的出演为影片增色不少，他的演技得以充分的发挥。 |

《暗物质》这部电影有点奇怪，奇怪的就是跳跃而轻松的调子，把一个看起来偏离旋律的暴力结尾包裹得过于晦涩。刘烨所扮演的刘星并不是一个抑郁的人，在影片的大半过程里，他都显得阳光而积极。但最终在遭遇一点挫折，也就是被导师否定了论文论题之后，就突然爆发了畸变的心理。他持枪杀人，而且不止是针对某一人，前后四名导师两名同学倒在他的枪下，还有一个重伤后变得高位截瘫的女雇工。 《暗物质》的前半部，浪漫的西部民谣让人心醉。一群小伙子在轻松写意的生活里，充满着对未来的向往。然而风云突变，后半部隐隐浮出些黑色的调子。奇怪的声调，奇怪的圣歌，与那突然变得阴郁起来的刘星，总是让人感到惊诧。甚至在影片结尾那场暴力事件爆发时，人人都会感到莫名其妙。刘星不是一个精神病患者，他积极开朗的性格曾让他有较好的人缘。我看过几个关于他的回忆录，都称这种事发生在他的身上不可思议，他没有理由这么做，也不太可能这么做。但最终，他做了，而且是如此的惊世骇俗。 刘星的作为不象是一个委屈的报复者，他看起来更象是一个命运的赌徒。我想，电影里他所表现出来的畸变，并不是因他的心理受到了怎样的打击，而更象是他留美希望破灭后的绝望崩溃。毕业论文没有通过，对于他而言，就只剩下一条路，收拾收拾回国，回到家里好好厚积薄发。而且电影中并没有阻断他的退路，他的同伴就曾要引见他到国内一著名的物理研究所去做研究工作。他想留在美国，这个在电影影像里看起来是充满着物质诱惑的天堂，他的杀人行为并不完全是出于报复，因为牵连了与事件无干的几位无辜者在内，这更象是他对生活绝望的一场宣泄。对他而言，留在美国比他获得诺贝尔奖、十年苦读、二十年寒窗更有价值，他是价值观出现了扭曲，而并不是一个单纯的报复杀人行为。这一点，电影没有区分开来，而且，多数道德观察者也并没有提及到。 |

前两天看了电影《暗物质》（Dark Matter）的rough cut，大概在圣丹斯电影节放映的应该是剪辑好的版本吧。 故事取材自90年代发生在美国的真人真事，即中国留学生卢刚的杀人事件。本以为这样的独立影片会勇敢地探讨人性的黑暗面、以及文化冲突、水土不服等问题。但真的有点失望，影片把中国留学生刚到美国时的种种不适应，做了最肤浅、最夸张的描写，里面当然有真实的细节，但总体上人物根本不可信。从主题上讲，影片的投机取巧使之失去了原来事件的冲击力。 一个很外向、很容易跟人相处的人，是不会一举枪杀好几个人的。 最奇怪的是，华裔导演陈士争没有给斯特里普发挥演技的广阔空间。众所周知，斯特里普是不需要导演便可以给予极具厚度的角色塑造。影片中一场较感人的戏，是刘烨扮演的刘星来到斯特里普家送礼物，欲说还休，他离开后，镜头只给斯特里普一个侧面。我想，换了别的导演，此处可以出现一个叫绝的镜头，因为那时斯特里普的角色内心非常复杂，而那样的镜头是可以把整个表演提升到奥斯卡水准的。 刘烨的表现还不错，有点像留学生中的乖乖仔。只是很难想象他最终会变成卢刚式的人物。当然那是编导的责任 |

谈到刚和自己在表演上有过合作的奥斯卡影后梅丽尔·斯特里普，刘烨的话显然多了起来。 刘烨：我的专业是表演，你发现能人真能，一般角度，咱们看戏能猜到对手的眼神、动作大概差不多，她完全是想不到，完全不知道她想干什么，她就是这种演员，她是最厉害的。 与这么大牌的演员同台飙戏压力自然也大，不过一段哭戏的默契配合让刘烨找到了自信。 刘烨：梅丽尔在美国是一个大明星，那天看着我们俩一起哭，我感觉挺好的，能把别人带入（规定情景），也不是带入，共同能创造出一种氛围。 梅丽尔·斯特里普和刘烨的表演感染了现场所有人，而且还因此影响了影片的拍摄。 刘烨：当时导演说可以了，摄影师说不行再拍，说为什么，摄影师说我眼泪滴在取景器上面了，那场戏我觉得挺有意思的。我觉得想想这些很兴奋的事，以后可以跟别人夸耀的资本。 自己的演技能够得到外国同行的肯定，这让刘烨非常高兴，我们也忠心祝愿眼前这个阳光的大男孩，能在国际影坛闯出自己的一番天地。 |

刘 烨：多年来，进军好莱坞的东方明星无疑都以功夫作为魅力杀手锏，与梅丽尔斯特里普合演《暗物质》的金马影帝刘烨渴望打破这一怪圈。年初在美国主流电影节圣丹斯电影节上，刘烨的表演就给西方媒体及专业影评、业内人士留下深刻印象。从《暗物质》中，我们多少都能看到刘烨在成名作《蓝宇》中的影子，可即使这样，仍然技惊好莱坞。 |

梅里尔-斯特里普煞有介事地打着太极拳。她的云手一挥，推出片名：《暗物质》。这是刘烨在好莱坞拍摄的新片的开头。没有字幕，没有配音，百分之八十的台词是英文对白。可是居然看进去了，情绪被刘星的命运牵动。 （1） 影片正式开始，来自中国的留学生刘星去拜见美国教授瑞塞。在这位天体物理学界的重量级人物面前，刘星呼吸急促，神情紧张。当他得知瑞塞决定收他为徒时，他连说了两个“GREAT HONNOR”（巨大荣耀），又跟他见到的每个人说“THANK YOU”。刘星向自己远在北京的普通工人父母写信，汇报自己找到了正确的方向。接着是师爱徒敬，刘星在瑞塞的指导下学业精进，瑞塞一再夸他聪明了得。瑞塞的同事乔安娜仰慕中国文化，刘星与她相谈甚欢。他们驱车行进在原野中，一起高唱中国民歌。影片的前半段就是这么其乐融融，那场留学生偷窃电视信号看毛片的戏例外--它让人明显地感觉到了留学生们生活圈子的狭小和精神上的压抑。 奇峰突起。事情起源于刘星在宿舍里煮面条时的狂想。看着涌动的白色泡沫，他的脑子里冒出了关于暗物质理论的重大灵感。他像中举的范进一样跟每个人倾诉着“我中了”的狂喜，甚至把正在房间里跟美国女友做爱的同学拽了出来，让人停下性福分享喜悦。在台阶上，他截住了瑞塞教授，急不可待地描述自己的突破，并请求以此作为论文题目。书中暗表，假使刘星的研究获得成功，瑞塞教授赖以成名的模型将被否定，至少要被超越。于是，瑞塞粗暴地拒绝了刘星。刘星望着扬长而去的导师，满脸惊愕。在此前的一次闲谈中，刘星曾跟瑞塞讨论过师生关系：中国人从来不挑战他的老师。而瑞塞大笑着鼓励他：你可以用任何方式来挑战我！ 刘星悄悄地把研究成果在学术刊物上发表了。瑞塞为此震怒。毫不知情的刘星，以此为题准备了毕业论文。在论文答辩会上，瑞塞边角发炮，纯属找茬地否决了论文。刘星愤怒地咆哮：平常我用“单精度”给你做了上万次演算，你从来没告诉我要用“双精度”！抗议无效。另一个教授的力挺也无效：你知道他的论文很有创造性！刘星没有取得学位，而且被瑞塞赶出了团队。 与此同时，刘星心仪的咖啡店美国女孩拒绝了他的示爱。他笑得尴尬极了。刘星的一个中国同学改名劳伦斯，在学术上决不肯越瑞塞的雷池一步，获得了教授的全情赏识，又娶媳妇又过年。刘星为谋生而推销化妆品，他的背影格外孤清。在经历了一次向乔安娜的不成功推销后，刘星了无生趣。乔安娜泪水长流，却无法改变什么。她为刘星向瑞塞求过情，但刚愎的教授心意已决。刘星换上了一件崭新的羽绒服，而此前他一直穿着旧衣服，把省下来的每一分钱都寄给了父母。刘星走进学术厅，举枪射杀了劳伦斯、瑞塞等人。鲜血满地。影片戛然而止。 （2） 没错！这就是1991年11月1日发生在美国依阿华大学校园的枪杀案--卢刚事件。现实中的卢刚比电影中的刘星承受了更多的不公和冤屈。他被自己的导师、系主任、院长死死压制，始终不能出头。他的博士论文无法通过，他想要一封好听点的推荐信而不得，他申请完全有资格获得的奖学金而不得，他的路越走越窄。他写信向新闻界投诉，但“公众利益的看门狗”们置之不理。他按照程序向上申诉，换来的是石沉大海或者赤裸裸的威胁。一切被我们平常津津乐道的美国式投诉制度全部失灵，没有人肯为一个“偏执”的中国留学生出头。就连他的中国同学们，也不带这个“小气”的同胞玩。在他用打字机整整齐齐打好的三页英文遗书中，卢刚第一次揭示了自己幽深、黑暗、神秘、生动的内心世界。这是一个有着重大缺陷的灵魂，他急功近利、认死理儿、计较钱财、报复心强，但问题更大的是弥漫在美国主流社会中的种族歧视的阴云。一肚子学问的美国教授们一脸的周吴郑王，可是他们大多数都长了一颗被毒素浸染过的心。跟中国一样，卢刚的导师也是包工头和人贩子，学生就是民工和猪仔。美国科研界也有潜规则和学术腐败，不懂人情世故的学生注定日子难过。卢刚是个悲剧人物，同时他也是一面照出美国峥嵘面孔的明镜。哪里有压迫，哪里就有反抗。跟通电公司大骂老板的“史上最牛女秘书”一样，跟独楼对抗开发商的“史上最牛钉子户”一样，卢刚某种意义上堪称“史上最牛的留学生”。这一事件震动全美，中国人的温顺形象因之而一变。 电影是卢刚事件的简化版。刘星一边给家里人写信编织着走向辉煌的鬼话，一边走向了心理变态的毁灭之路。虽然开始听不懂台词而看得昏昏，但我通过看剧本补齐了信息量。杀人应该受到谴责，可他无助的眼神让我内心隐隐作痛。几个月前，我看到《创世纪》里的许文彪总是“十分辛苦五分回报”，终被逼上了邪路，曾经满心凄凉。我见不得这种下死力气奋斗却总是被黑暗吞没的人，心情无限拧巴。 这是导演陈士争的处女作。全片用金、木、水、火、土来划分段落。用刘星给父母写信的旁白作为叙事线索。基本上是同情刘星的视角。刘烨又演了一个自己擅长的“闷骚男”，他的很多表情信息丰富。他十分佩服乔安娜的扮演者斯特里普，“一般的演员，你可以预见他的表情。但我完全不知道梅里尔的下个表情是什么”。推销化妆品那场戏苍凉悲切，斯特里普手到擒来，刘烨不处下风，不辱使命。据说，在最初的本子里，刘烨和斯特里普还有一段亲热戏，弄得小刘背上了沉重的思想包袱，后来这场戏跟导演的很多其他设想一样被去掉了。 这是一部不错的片子，但还不够震撼。 |

其实我在Sundance电影节待的时间很短，主要是去参加Variety的'10 Directors to Watch' party, 并会晤他们的大佬们。能拿到我们这期杂志（奥斯卡专辑，封面是小金人儿）的人，可以在社交版面看到我在美国的素影。 晚上看了Dark Matter（国内叫《流星》或《暗物质》）的首映，坐得满满的人。放映前见了除梅丽尔斯特里普以外的所有主创，还有那个特有钱的投资人，一个瘦小但披着大皮草的老头和他高大漂亮也披着皮草的老婆，在一堆穿休闲装的人里格外显眼。这是我头一次见到银幕中的美国大款离得这么近，老头拉了皮的精神矍铄的脸上保持着得体的笑，对我这个从中国来的陌生人也很亲切。刘烨带来了新女友，这女孩儿我以前认识，还问人家：你怎么跑这么远来做翻译呢？片子我很喜欢，刘烨给梅丽尔试化妆品一段戏很是催泪。电影放完后的提问环节，我是唯一用中文提问的。和陈士争导演成了朋友，后来他来北京，我还给他介绍过演员。 |

The Hollywood Reporter Dark Matter. “Ostensibly based on a true story, [Dark Matter; site] follows the progress of brilliant young Chinese cosmology post-grad Liu Xing who finds that coming to the US to work with his academic idol ain't necessarily all it's cracked up to be," writes Ben Walters for Time Out. "The performances are pretty good, with an engaging lead turn from Liu Ye and Meryl Streep on typically assured form as the university patron who takes a shine to him, but debut director Chen Shi-Zheng is less adept, wheeling out gimmicky effects in an attempt to get inside Liu's head." "Critiquing both the relentless Eastern drive for success and the insular, self-serving nature of Western academia, this debut feature from opera and theater helmer Chen Shi-Zheng never fully succeeds in burrowing under its protagonist's skin, despite conspicuous effort," writes Justin Chang in Variety. "There's a smart movie to be made about the often unhealthy pressure Asians face to work hard and succeed, but even as a tale of one student's destructive choices, Billy Shebar's script fails to lay the necessary groundwork for Liu Xing's sudden shift into violence. To set the scene: Liu Xing (Liu Ye) stands in front of Hubble University’s panel giving his theory on an expansion to his professor’s model of the origin of the universe. Jacob Reiser (Aidan Quinn) is Xing’s professor and on the panel as well. Reiser is quick to squash the dreams of his once favorite student because he has realized that his student is starting to surpass him. He says that he is over his head and in uncharted waters. Another one of the men on the panel leans over and says to Reiser, “Maybe we are over are heads.” I couldn’t agree more when it comes to discussing this film. “Dark Matter” is the story of one Liu Xing, who is an overly bright student from Beijing who has been given the opportunity to work in America under his cosmologist hero, Jacob Reiser. The university is also a stomping ground to Joanna Silver (Meryl Streep), who tasks herself with bringing over Chinese students to hopefully make breakthroughs in science. Joanna takes a liking to Xing when he explains to her his breakthrough theory of dark matter in space. Soon Xing’s work surpasses anything is hero Reiser has ever done and therefore, out of jealousy, Reiser decides to stop Xing from progressing further. This sends Xing into a downward spiral, culminating in an extreme cinematic resolution. “Dark Matter,” directed by Chen Shi-Sheng, displays how treading in foreign territory, both geographically and cosmically, can be the biggest obstacle you may ever face. Going in, I knew nothing about this film and unfairly, when I heard Meryl Streep was in this movie, I assumed it would be a bloated dramatic waste of a few hours. I was, however, wrong. The film started out as this quasi-comedy and I enoyed all of the quirks. Meryl Streep was absolutely amazing in the film as Joanna and I thought she had this great odd chemistry with Liu Ye’s character. Unfortunately, the tone shifted and the film just went downhill, finishing with one of the most ridiculous endings, for the direction the tale had taken, I have ever seen. Ok, maybe I went too far. I won't say it is the most ridiculous, but it was definitely up there with film school cliche type of endings that was just uncalled for with the rest of the film, the seeming need to add edginess for edginess's sake. Supposedly this is based on a true story but I feel that cinematically the transition can be rough. Granted I know nothing about the true story behind this, but I have tried to look it up (with no results). In my opinion, the ending was the biggest mistake the director could have made with this film. This is a great film, to a point. Unfortunately the ending doesn't deliver, making the entire feature an exercise is wasted potential. But maybe that's the point. ==== 作者认为电影不错，但是结局有点突兀，情节安排铺垫不够，没有谈演员的表演。 |

原文使用繁体字，估计出自香港观众的手笔： －－－－－ 《暗物质》(Dark Matter) 要处理卢刚事件这个争议题材, 导演陈士争确是很有勇气. 可是他的电影处女作, 拍得只有七成, 其余三成不知去了哪里. 导演 (希望) / 观众最想了解的是: 为甚麼好端端的一个知识份子、而且是国家级尖子、能够出国留学、研究的还是平常人觉得比任何事物更深奥的天文学, 最后会闯入校园, 举枪射杀教授? 没错, 刘烨是演活刘星这个角色, 愕然、失落、沮丧、绝望、愤怒等心理转变的过程, 都清楚呈现出来, 导演却忘记交待整套电影最重要的一环:「如何因为教授的蔑视导致梦想幻灭, 逐渐失去理智」. 据知陈士争是舞台剧导演, 至少应该知道保留戏码的重要性. 既然没有, 唯有回顾全片的脉络. 其实导演颇有心思, 埋了不少暗笔, 交待刘星面对学业和生活的冲击. 他幻想自己是西部牛仔, 击毙学术上的敌手; 他的英语不流利, 没办法揣摩教授们说话背后的意义; 他不爱任何娱乐、只顾执著於自己的研究, 连教授都要说「别那麼快要冲刺」; 他追求茶店的美国女子, 却搭不通女子的电话线 (女子以为天文学是医学之类的科目) : 他向女子解释宇宙的浪漫, 她却只关心自己的容颜; 他的竞争对手始终不肯开腔说中文, 认为要尽快适应生活, 索性信了教, 入了籍. 导演甚至加插一场留学侨胞闹著玩唱《蝴蝶夫人》, 明确暗示East meets West的悲剧. 有关中国人面对美国的文化冲击, 亲历其境的白先勇写过不少短篇小说, 反映实况. 《安乐乡的一日》是表表者. 故事说一个随夫移居美国小镇的传统妇人, 拒绝被美国同化, 极力保持她眼中所认为的中国传统美德, 不知不觉间将自己与外界隔绝, 活得愈益苍白. 就连逐渐西化的小女儿, 都认为妈妈不再可亲. 日积月累下, 妇人备受压抑的情绪终於爆发, 将不满发泄在女儿身上. 最后丈夫如此劝导妻子:「如果女儿能够尽快适应环境, 她的生活便愈快乐. 做父母的, 总不能不让子女长大成为一个心理健全能适应环境的人吧? 」适应环境的「重要」, 白先勇说得比《暗物质》更多更通透. 与其说刘星急功近利, 倒不如是抱负极高. 他要研究宇宙的暗物质, 想得到诺贝尔奖. 间断的片段告诉观众, 他的生活一向清贫, 年迈父母辛勤劳动, 也不忘寄点口菓给远方的儿子. 国内的大学生拚了命读书、跟同僚竞争是有目共睹的, 但太专注便不理会世界的转动. 刘星的父母说儿子只会读书, 这就糟了. 在中国, 有政府分配学子到各种机构工作、研究, 但其中一少部份人, 会否不懂应付生活呢? (要人服侍的「废人生活」, 讽刺地在发达地区如新加坡或香港漫延) 刘星明显是理论多於实践的人, 当他失去让自己无忧无虑地研究的学术环境, 他也就失去所有. 当刘星要低头当销售员, 那种不能言喻的委屈, 连旁人都忍受不了. 热爱中国文化的校董Joanne (梅丽史翠普) 跟刘星极之投缘. Joanne甚至因为不能帮刘星的忙而抱歉. 这个角色外面上有同情中国留学生的意味, 但内里又是另一章. Joanne喜欢中国文化, 所以大力资助中国留学生. 她的生活处处显现对中国文化的爱戴: 喝中国茶、穿仿中国服饰、学中文、耍太极. 但到底Joanne只知外层而不知内里. 她愈是生活得中国化, 愈显得对中国的无知. 即使有一副热心肠, 也无法明白刘星无法回头、只能向前冲的心理. 中国知识份子到外闯的确困难重重: 想要出头果真需要天时、地利、人和. 刘星不过是想改善家人生活和追求知识顶峰罢, 谁料到这种不回头的固执会毁灭自己! 主角不幸遇上一个不容其他人挑战自己、好保著自己学术地位的「名师」(Aidan Quinn) . 教授年青时推翻了老师的理论, 成名多年后是个死守学说、靠留学生替自己研究学术, 但内里极度轻蔑门生的学棍. 并非所有人都同意教授, 只是身在学府, 最重视的是自己饭碗, 靠人脉关系「埋堆」才可以生存. 刘星一心只想研究学术, 不会阅读人性险恶, 他甚至估计不到教授反对通过他的论文, 并不是因为使用何种运算方法, 而是因为锋芒过露, 足以动摇教授的地位. 刘星向教授赞扬美国的老师比中国的更能接挑战, 其实东西方都一样, 都不喜欢学生胜过自己. 学术研究的真谛, 在乎不断求真, 但到底有多少人紧紧遵守这谦虚的关口? 没有东西方之分别. 刘星研究大爆炸的成因, 但同时亦引爆了自己. |

By Justin Lowe PARK CITY -- Venturing into delicate emotional territory, opera and theater director-turned-filmmaker Chen Shi-Zheng crafts an unsettling first feature that examines issues of personal ambition, academic ethics and the obstacles to cultural assimilation in the U.S. The film's inspired-by-true-events pedigree will interest discerning viewers, though its dark tone might prove a challenge for theatrical distribution. With careful handling by a specialty outfit, "Dark Matter" could reap modest rewards from art house markets. The film won the Alfred P. Sloan prize at Sundance, which honors an outstanding feature focusing on science or technology. Referencing an actual incident at an American university more than a decade ago, the filmmakers reimagine the events as a story about Chinese cosmology student Liu Xing (Liu Ye). Leaving university in Beijing, Liu immigrates to the U.S. in 1991 to study astrophysics at fictional Valley State University with renowned researcher and academic Jacob Reiser (Aidan Quinn). With great admiration for his mentor, Liu quickly becomes Reiser's favored student, though fitting into American society and the university hierarchy isn't quite as easy. Social support for immigrants is available from the local church, where wealthy Joanna Silver (Meryl Streep), a devotee of Chinese culture and philanthropist of the university's astrophysics department, frequently assists newly arrived students. She quickly develops an admiration for Liu's keen intellect, particularly after he explains the concept of dark matter to her, a theory positing that 99% of the universe is composed of invisible material. Reiser and his graduate students are developing a model of the universe that doesn't include dark matter theory, so when Liu presents his thesis topic on the subject to Reiser and the dissertation committee, he meets with resistance rather than the support he expected. Liu suspects that Reiser is withholding the committee's approval because his ideas contradict his professor's. Indeed, Reiser resorts to ethically questionable tactics to thwart Liu's candidacy. Although Joanna encourages Liu to pursue his own cosmological model, even her intervention can't persuade Reiser to give Liu a chance to prove himself. Meanwhile, a newly arrived Chinese student (Lloyd Suh) -- Liu's nemesis from Beijing University -- becomes Reiser's new protege. The tension engendered by academic politics and the demands of advanced astrophysics push Liu toward a mental and emotional crisis as he becomes increasingly delusional and dangerous, finally erupting in a shocking act of violence. Chen, himself a Chinese immigrant to the U.S., explores the difficulties that Chinese students face when relocating to the U.S. through the lens of the academic community, which often is the gateway for many new arrivals. Through Liu's frequent letters to his parents detailing his academic progress, voiced over scenes of his working-class family in China, Chen demonstrates the importance of the American dream to many newcomers. The director's theatrical background is apparent in Liu's occasional fantasy sequences about becoming a famous researcher and the final climactic scene. However, neither the main narrative nor these stylistic devices goes deep enough to reveal his motivations. Liu Ye's acting abilities alone are insufficient for the task. In an evocatively tamped-down performance, Streep skillfully evokes Joanna's drive to assist new immigrants, but her fascination with Chinese culture and Liu in particular comes across as rather obscure. Quinn is strong as the alternately affable and acidic Reiser. Like the dark matter that forms the film's essential metaphor, Liu's desperate downward spiral from model student to disgraced outsider remains essentially mysterious. |

Anyway, my name is Tonya, and I'm 29 years old. I was born only one day later than Liu Ye, 03/24/1978. Ever since I saw "Memoirs of a Geisha" and became fans of the beautiful, wonderful actresses in that, I started watching all of their movies, which then brought me to know such wonderful actors as well, Liu Ye being one of my top-two favorites ever since first seeing him onscreen. Also, I've started to learn how to speak Mandarin (as well as Korean and Japanese). And now I've got tickets to go see "Dark Matter" at the APA Film Festival in nearby D.C. I'm so excited! |

Thursday October 4th, 2007 I attended the "Dark Matter" screening at the Landmark E-Street Cinema in Washington D.C., the centerpiece presentation of the 8th Annual DC Asian Pacific American Film Festival. I really enjoyed the film and all the performances, especially by Liu Ye. The movie is comical in parts, educational, inspirational, encouraging as well as discouraging, heartwarming as well as gut-wrenching…overall touching in so many ways. Dr. Ed Shu, an Associate Professor of Public Health from the University of Maryland, led a discussion after the screening about mental-health issues among the Asian American community. Dr. Shu arrived to the United States fifteen years ago from Taiwan and commented that he himself could relate all too well to some of the early scenes in the film, having friends cut one's hair in order to save money and attending church not necessarily for worship, rather for the free food provided during the services. Among the issues addressed by the professor during the discussion was the lack of community support when struggling with the pressures of the cultural as well as academic adjustments experienced by Asian American students. He also addressed the prevalent need for better resources for these students not only from the University level, but from their homeland as well, regarding parental skills and the extremely high expectations put on Asian American individuals. Several audience members commented on the topics at hand in the movie: one addressed the similarities in terrorism in that they are often educated individuals who had been uprooted from their countries; one addressed that regardless of the pressures, the character of Liu Xing made a deliberate choice in what he did, following his own ambitions and ignoring his peers and advisors at the time; and one audience member seemed to be more closely connected to the true events that the film's story was based on, although how directly or indirectly was not revealed. Although not by name, she spoke of the real Liu Xing (Gang Lu) having been the premiere mind of China at that time and of how unkind the, I believe she was referring to, American community was to the Asian immigrants at that time as well. Again, I had a wonderful time and thoroughly enjoyed the movie and discussion afterwards. |

才华横溢的中国留美学生刘星怀揣着改善命运的美国梦想和冲刺诺贝尔奖的雄心，在宇宙学里拼搏，当他的研究成果直接威胁到老板钻研多年的莱瑟模式时，老板抛弃了他，并凭借自己的地位，冠冕堂皇地否定了他的选题和答辩，将这位天才学生推到一个难以接受的位置。此时的刘星突然发现离开自己的梦想咫尺天涯，选择了一个令人扼腕的解决方式。 刘星是属于科学的。他在自己的研究领域里奋斗，就像苍鹰在天空中翱翔，自由自在，能量无穷。当他发现暗物质这个可以将他带入诺贝尔殿堂的方向，他就拒绝放弃。刘星用希尔瓦夫人能够理解的浅近的比喻，来说明深奥的暗物质概念，描绘出一个令人神往的领域，语言朴素而优美，激情洋溢，希尔瓦夫人被他对科学的痴迷追求深深地感染，为他的学识和才华所倾倒。此后的一天，刘星失去奖学金后，为了生活来到希尔瓦夫人家里推销护肤品。他握着夫人的手臂，在上面涂抹样品，尴尬窘迫的眼睛躲避着她同情的视线，破碎的自尊无处藏匿，与当初侃暗物质时自信和向往的神情形成两极反差。他很想向这位真心关爱他的女士诉说心中的苦涩，然而内心的极度自尊和矜持使他无法面对夫人含泪的眼睛，他终于借口要上图书馆，仓皇离去。这一段戏中，刘烨和斯特里普的出色演技交相辉映，重重地撞击观众的心，使观众的心痛与夫人的心痛交融一处。刘星具有一个优秀教师和科学家所需的才能。如果他还活着，也许会成为学科的顶尖教授。可惜这颗新星还没有来得及释放他的光芒，就被他周遭和自身的暗物质吞噬了。 导演陈士铮在电影《暗物质》中，引导各国观众关注和理解他国文化的不同，也探讨了应当如何面对理想和现实的差距这一世界任何角落都存在的矛盾。卢刚事件是许多留美华人心里的一个痛，许多人看到了外国留学生面临的额外压力，看到了中国和美国教育体系对学生社会、心理方面需求关怀的欠缺，但是依然宁愿把卢刚看成是一个孤立的个人事件。陈士铮勇敢面对，从卢刚事件中汲取灵感，引导人们思考和关注，的确是有十分积极的意义的。 影片从开始一直到最后高潮之前都十分幽默，把中国留学生这个群体的许多特征刻画得入木三分，连刘星失去教授宠爱，陷入困境后很伤感的地方都有诙谐的元素，轻松撩人与沉重感人并存，有些部分让人笑得心酸。我想这是陈士铮导演深厚的舞台功底为影片加分的地方。当刘星穿上那件白色羽绒服，在校园里朝着给他的竞争对手颁奖的会场走去时，他脸色阴沉，表情严峻却不歇斯底里，步履疾速却不慌张忙乱，到此时为止，事先不知情的观众根本不知道一场大悲剧将要发生。枪声响起，影片在观众一片愕然之中嘎然结束。我虽然知道故事，仍然为电影中的刘星决定玉石俱焚后冷静地完成整个暴力过程这场戏与卢刚真实事件中的表现如此相似而震惊不已。 这样一个文雅谦恭的学生演变成一个杀人凶手，让许多观众和影评人惊愕，感到难以接受，似乎整个故事链中少写了一环。对于这个问题，影片的导演和制片在旧金山亚美电影节上谈到，真实生活里，突发事件发生后，经常听到凶手的邻居和同事说，“真没有想到他/她会做出这样的事”。一个普通的，和你我一样的人，会采取非常行动，常常没有一个合理的解释；电影给大家留下了震惊，与真实世界很吻合，也把思考留给了观众。这正是作品期望的效果。 《暗物质》电影在大屏幕上看，效果很好。刘烨的出色表演精致细腻地刻画了刘星从明星学生到失败者的变化过程和他周遭各式各样的人际关系，刘星为了成功，不但在学业上拼搏，也有意识地试图融入新的生活，甚至还有过些许成功。他同老板莱瑟教授一起吸雪茄烟，品烈酒，动作有些笨拙，也聊得颇为融洽；他向咖啡馆收款的那个单纯的美国姑娘展开小孔雀的尾巴，博得了她的青睐。但是对一到美国就投奔基督教（摩门教？），不再讲中文并且口口声声“我们都是为莱瑟工作” 的北京同学劳伦斯.范，他和其他中国同学都感到不齿。 刘星初见莱瑟教授时，他的谦恭态度不仅是因为从中国带来的传统教养，也因为自己能够幸运地成为这个学术泰斗的学生，他充满崇拜的模洋和欣喜万分的情绪有极强的感染力。同我坐在一起的一位记者谈起他的表演时，津津乐道地模仿他点头哈腰地说"是，杰克教授！" 时的逗乐模样，忍俊不已。后来同老板关系恶化，他无法把握自己的命运，又倔犟地不肯放弃梦想，紧抿的嘴唇显示出他内心对压力的抗拒。与同胞室友相处，总是十分舒适融洽，信心满满。对席尔瓦夫人，他从最初的毕恭毕敬，到轻松自在一同驾车出游的好友，到信赖而随便地仰躺在她身边看天花板上的宇宙模型，再到卖化妆品时下意识地保护自尊的弓背拱肩姿势，这一层一层的变化和细节区分，成功地展现了一个中国学生在美国遭遇的文化和社会冲突过程。 |

Bay Area Reporter Online 25th SF International Asian American Film Festival by David Lamble Dark Matter Liu Ye, the beautiful young actor who stole the hearts of queer filmgoers as the sensitive gay Chinese student in Stanley Kwan's Lan Yu, shares the screen with Meryl Streep and Aidan Quinn in director Chen Shi-Zheng's (written by Billy Shebar) exploration of the tragic collision between the dreams of a Chinese physics student and the harsh reality of scientific politics in American academia. Based on a true incident in which a Chinese exchange student went on a shooting rampage at a school in the States, the filmmakers show how the impossibly idealistic Liu Xing gradually becomes disillusioned, then delusional as his American dream unravels in a miasma of cultural misunderstanding and professional jealousy in the impossibly wide-open spaces of a Western university (the film was shot in Utah). Liu Xing and his fellow exchange students are taken by Streep's den-mother character to visit a Western ghost town, where the young men get to indulge their fantasies of having a make-believe gunfight in which all the participants fall to the ground make-believe dead. This scene resonates tragically at story's end, seamlessly weaving fantasy and reality, as well as the often impossibly conflicting cultural imperatives of two proud societies. By Jeff Vice Deseret Morning News The Sundance Film Festival is looking a lot like Utah this year — and not just because of its Park City and Salt Lake City screening venues (as well as those in a handful of other communities). Three films featured in the 2007 edition of Sundance — the features "Dark Matter" and "It is fine! EVERYTHING IS FINE.," and the short documentary "Mother Superior" — were shot in Utah and have strong local ties. And so does a fourth film, "American Fork," which has been selected to play in the competing Slamdance Film Festival. MERYL STREEP stars in "Dark Matter," a drama based on the real-life story of a Chinese astronomy scholar who encountered racial discrimination while pursuing his doctorate studies in America. (Streep plays a university patron who befriends the student, played by Liu Ye, who is also in the current "Curse of the Golden Flower.") Aside from some second-unit photography and one sequence filmed in China, the movie was shot entirely in Utah during June and early July. Utah Valley State College in Orem housed much of the production, as did areas of Federal Heights and a neighborhood near Trolley Square mall. The production also boasted nearly 60 Utah crew members, including Jeff Miller, who worked as the line producer, or unit-production manager, which is essentially the troubleshooter of movie productions. Miller reported that the film was relatively trouble-free, however. "It went fairly smoothly, and the other producers were genuinely pleased by the professionalism of the local crews, as well as the variety of shooting locations." In fact, Miller says the film's other producers lobbied to shoot in Utah after making another movie here, the yet-to-be-released drama "Bonneville." He said he's "thrilled" that the film got into Sundance. It is being shown in the Spectrum section, one of the noncompetitive categories. "I'm proud to have been associated with the film, and even prouder that it's being included at Sundance, where, hopefully, it will find a receptive audience," said Miller, who also works with film veteran Scott Swofford's Vineyard Productions locally. |

让人心酸的《暗物质》 梦碎的滋味是甚麼？屈辱、无奈、不甘、不服、愤慨、怨恨...... 《暗物质》有Meryl Streep和刘烨，单看卡士已具十足瞄头。刘烨逐渐在荷里活大放异彩，今趟跟Meryl Streep做对手戏，表现毫不逊色。故事围绕著留学美国的博士生刘星（刘烨饰），由於天资聪敏表现卓悦而获得教授另眼相看，不断给予难得的研究机会。刘星同时也得到热爱中国文化的校董Joanne （Meryl Streep饰）偏爱有加，刘星亦对Joanne非常敬重。刘星就如一块翠玉，有足够能力问鼎诺贝尔奖，这亦是他人生的最大心愿；问题是，刘星锋芒太露惹来教授不满。忌才的教授连番打击刘星，即使刘星的论文完美无暇仍被评为不及格。另一个同乡因为懂得奉承教授，最终成功毕业成为博士。刘星亦作出了犹如暗物质引发宇宙大爆炸一样的反击行动。 电影确实铺排得不错，开初看似平淡无味，剧情发展下去越发吸引。一直到最后十分钟，故事一下子扭转，小妹在毫无心理准备下，看得呆了。 整套戏都很中国化，片子由Meryl Streep耍太极开始，随后差不多全戏的所有配乐都是中国歌，好像「往事难忘」和「红河村」等。几个中国留学生不断用普通话对话，就连Joanne都偶然会用普通话。电影不断揭示中国留学生在外国的辛酸，在国内成绩优异得以留学外国，一心追寻梦想，在海外留学但住在简陋的宿舍里；谁知当日的美梦已不知不觉破碎了，无路可退，有人改变自己迎合他人，有人选择黯然回国，有人如刘星一样被迫忘记理想当上化装品传销。 刘烨的表现很抢镜，演活了一个中国留学生怀材不遇的心情起伏。他初到美国时的那种兴奋心情，带著一股傻劲一心要干一番成绩，跟著不断埋首研究钻研暗物质，屡次得到惊人的发现，奈何被教授处处阻挠。他的心情急转直下，到最后绝望得走上不归路。其中一幕尤其印像深刻，曾几何时满怀理想的刘星拿著一袋护肤品，上门找Joanne让她试，当刘星双手颤抖的为Joanne涂面霜时，那情景令人心酸得想哭。 只觉怀才不遇和忌才的例子，在现实生活中实在太多了。离乡别井生活在外地的，吃的苦头固之然要比待在家乡的还要多。人人都想出人头地，但真正如愿的又有几人呢？幸好小妹安於现状，小小甜头已够开心半天。做人还是简单点好。 |

Dark Matter 暗物质 刘烨真的演得很好，他算是一个英俊又具实力的演员。当然Meryl Streep的演技也毋容置疑 开始时的刘烨是个纯朴、勤奋和聪敏的中国留学生，为人真诚对学术热诚，自然获得教授和资助人宠爱 可是也因为他的执着和天才，不会拍马屁的性格，他被小心眼的教授所忌恨， 使了卑劣的手段使他的博士学位考核不能通过，他顿时像被打进地狱， 一切父母的寄望、自己的梦想和未来都受到了打击，而一蹶不振成为美容用品销售员 最后他狠下心，拿着枪到学校把三个教授和另一个拍马屁的同学枪杀了！一脸绝望的他最后吞枪自杀！ 最好看一幕，是拿着美容用品的他去找Meryl Streep，为她涂试用品， 面对着他尊敬的Meryl Streep他的手颤抖着、难堪地为她的脸涂上面霜 Meryl Streep看着他，眼神中流露的是无限的怜惜痛爱和锥心的难过。两人这一场戏，演技淋漓尽致 |
