The book is about a story in the early 1930s. During the British Raj, a rebellion broke out in India. Conway, the British consul, together with his 3 colleagues, were evacuated from Baskul to Peshawur in an airplane. However, the plane was hijacked and flew instead over the mountains to Tibet. After a crash landing, the pilot died, after telling the four to seek shelter near Shangri-La. An elderly wisdom who spoke fluent English told Conway and his colleagues that they were in the ‘Blue Moon Valley’, the only passage into ‘Shangri-La’; and the cloud-kissing mountains towering at the front of the Valley were the magical Karakal. The elderly wisdom led them into the nearby lamasery of Shangri-La, which governs the whole Valley. Living here were thousands of people with different beliefs and customs, the majority of whom were Tibetans. They abided by the virtues of moderation and lived peacefully with each other. Here man and god were in perfect harmony, Heaven and Earth were one — a tranquil paradise, an earthy heaven with unparalleled serenity. Shangri-La cast a spell on all its inhabitants, who gained longevity. Even hundred-year-old men looked much younger for their ages. However, such privileged juvenescence would be lost as soon as they leave Shangri-La’. |
