Bells ringing in the rain 寒蝉凄切, 对长亭晚, 骤雨初歇. 都门帐饮无绪, 留恋处, 兰舟催发. 执手相看泪眼, 竟无语凝噎. 念去去,千里烟波, 暮霭沉沉楚天阔. 多情自古伤离别. 更那堪,冷落清秋节. 今宵酒醒何处? 杨柳岸,晓风残月. 此去经年, 应是良辰,好景虚设. 便纵有 千种风情, 更与何人说. Cicadas chill And drearily shrill, We stand face to face at an evening hour Before the pavilion, after a sudden shower. Can I care for drinking before we part? At the city gate Where we’re lingering late, But the boat is waiting for me to depart. Hand in hand, we gaze at each other’s tearful eyes And burst into sobs with words congealed on our lips, I’ll go my way Far, far away On miles and miles of misty waves where sail the ships, Evening clouds hang low in boundless Southern skies, Parting lovers would grieve as of old. How could I stand this clear autumn day so cold! Where shall I be found at day’s early break From wine awake? Moored by a riverbank planted with willow trees Beneath the waning moon and in the morning breeze. I’ll be gone for a year. In vain would good times and fine scenes appear! However gallant I am on my part, To whom can I lay bare my heart? |

Tune: Pride of Fishermen When autumn comes to the frontier, the scene looks drear, South-bound wild geese won’t stay even for a day. Uproar rises with horns blowing far and near. Walled in by peaks, smoke rises straight at sunset over isolated town with fastened gate. I hold a cup of wine, yet home is faraway. The northwest is not won and I’m obliged to stay. At the flutes’ doleful sound over frost-covered ground, None fall asleep, The general’s hair turns white and soldiers weep. |

West of the ancient fortress appears the Red Cliff. Here General Zhou won his early fame when the Three Kingdoms were all aflame. Jagged rocks tower in the air, swashing waves beat on the shore, rolling up a thousand heaps of snow. To match the hills and the river so fair, How many heroes brave of yore made a great show! I fancy General Zhou at the height of his success, with a plume fan in hand, In a silk hood, so brave and bright, laughing and jesting with his bride so fair, While enemy ships were destroyed as planned like shadowy castles in the air. Should their souls revisit this land, sentimental, his wife would laugh to say, Younger than they, I have my hair all turned gray. Life is but like a passing dream, I’d drink to the moon which once saw them on the stream. |

三月七日,沙湖道中遇雨.雨具先去,同行皆狼狈,余独不觉,已而隧晴,故作此词. 莫听穿林打叶声,何妨吟啸且徐行. 竹杖芒鞋轻胜马.谁怕.一蓑烟雨任平生. 料峭春风吹酒醒.微冷.山头斜照却相迎. 回首向来萧瑟处.归去.也无风雨也无晴. Tune: Calming the Waves Su Shi On the 7th day of the 3rd month we were caught in rain on our way to the Sandy Lake. The umbrellas had gone ahead, my companies were quite downhearted, but I took no notice. It soon cleared, and I wrote this. Listen to the rain beating against the trees. Why don’t you slowly walk and chant at ease? Better than a saddle I like sandals and cane. I’d fain. In a straw cloak, spend my life in mist and rain. My attic which last night in the east wind did stand Reminds me cruelly of the lost moonlit land. Carved balustrades and marble steps must still be there, But rosy faces cannot be as fair. If you would ask me how my sorrow has increased, Just see the over-brimming river flowing east!! |
